Zawirowania Dance Theatre

Zawirowania at Home and Abroad

The Scena Współczesna Foundation runs the Zawirowania Dance Theatre, which was established in 2004. Since its inception, the company’s artistic director and lead choreographer has been Elwira Piorun, a former soloist at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw, while Włodek Kaczkowski, a theatre director and dramaturg, serves as its director and manager. The company brings together dancers with diverse experiences in contemporary dance techniques. This fusion of different backgrounds creates a compelling stage presence and expands the ensemble’s creative potential.

Since 2005, the company has also organized the Zawirowania International Dance Festival, which celebrated its 22nd edition this year and features dance groups from all over the world, spanning from Japan and South Korea to Cape Verde and Mexico. Zawirowania is widely recognized for its international co-productions, having created performances in collaboration with companies and choreographers from Germany, Italy, Spain, India and Israel. The company frequently tours the globe and, during its more than 20-year history, has given 125 performances abroad across 80 cities, 35 countries and five continents. For the past few years, Zawirowania has been based at the Warsaw Dance and Theatre Centre, where it creates and presents its work.
